Cocoplum is a South Florida native and is often called ‘red-tip cocoplum’ because of the burgundy-red tips of new growth. Cocoplum grows excellent as a thick privacy hedge and is both appealing as a well-manicured hedge or when left to grow more natural. Cocoplum will tolerate drier conditions when established but looks its best with routine irrigation. Cocoplum is relatively low maintenance, sometimes only requiring a trim 3 – 4 times a year. Once Cocoplum matures to above 4ft, fertilization is usually unnecessary. Cocoplum produces tiny white flowers in the spring, which are followed by dark purple plums in late spring/early summer. These plums can be edible, and their fleshy consistency is ideal for making jams and jellies; however, the plums are mostly enjoyed by birds and other wildlife!
