Portulaca grows as a perennial ground cover in South Florida and is available in many colors; it is very easy to grow as it can tolerate sandy Florida soil and is moderately drought tolerant. However, regular irrigation is preferable to allow a strong bloom cycle. Portulaca loves being planted in full sun; you will notice that the blooms will open during periods of sun and close at night or during cloudy days. Regular trimming is required to keep Portulaca looking full and in shape. Feed twice per year with a balanced all-purpose fertilizer.
